After a fire, the ashes have less mass and take up less space than the trees and vegetation before the fire. How can this be explained in terms of the Law of Conservation of Mass?

mass is never lost...the ash is part of the mass..and the rest escaped into the air

the mass left the pieces of wood as tiny paticles that will fall and make its way into the devopment of other things as it decomposes
