I am an ASB Rep, and the officers have chosen the officially most overdone homecoming theme ever. I would have chosen a Star-Treck themed homecoming over this. Anyhow, I'm on decorations committe, in attempt to save this disaster. Any bright ideas or suggestions which would push the situation into the interesting or original category, would be greatly appreciated.

As of now, I am going to shoot for sophisticated. We have a budget of $1,000 for decorations.
This is what I'm thinking so far:
-tables coated in teal or ocean colored gossamer.
-hurricanes filled with 2 inches of sand, and topped with tea light candles as center-pieces.
-pearlescent white balloons (bubbles)
-sort of as a joke, Jaque Cousteau projected on mute at the wall.

Acknowledge and embrace the cheesiness. Go really over the top, but make it clear that you're making fun of the theme, not taking it seriously. Provide diving masks and snorkels for gag photos. A big tacky shipwreck in the middle of the floor. The gaudiest mermaids you can concoct on the walls, complete with seashell bras. Huge quantities of clear balloon 'bubbles.' Lots of fish. Shells everywhere. Lots of seaweed (green streamers) blown around by fans. Netting. You can't change it, so just go for it.

Decorate the ceiling by stringing blues & white crepe paper across the ballroom area (moves like the sea when a fan is on). Between those streams, you use fishing line and hang down
(about 2 feet over the dancers) paper cutouts of fish and other marine animals. The walls may also contain an underwater
theme through paintings, cutouts, mirrors etc.. Good Luck

Why not doing a floating balloon arch with the pearlescent balloons, for example over the ship wreck - then it would look like bubbles ascending from the ship. This type of arch is called "String of Pearls" - fits quite well with your theme, I think!

If you need help with making a balloon arch, check out the web site mentioned below. They give step-by-step instructions, illustrated with lots of photos.

Good luck!

Another idea would be a pirate ship wreck, kind of themed after Pirates of the Caribbean, complete with skeletons, treasure chests, eye patches, fake parrots, etc. Not sure if you could build a carboard ship too? That would be cool. I think you could still incorporate many of swbiblio's ideas (good) with this one too...Good luck!
