How does one go about starting their own radio station? Are there laws or restrictions or some kind of form I should know about or fill out? Does anyone know any websites or reliable sources of information that can accurately answer these questions?

The radio station would be small, of course, and would play a variety of music, have a few talk shows, and it would be (at first) voluntary, until enough money can be raised to pay people. Local bands and businesses could adverstise as well. Main target: teenagers, high schoolers, recent high school graduates.

If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it!

All broadcast radio stations require a license from the Federal Communications Commission, and there are LOTS of forms to fill out. You can learn more about professional radio stations at the Web site of Radio World magazine, listed below.

There are two other things you can do. The first is to get a job or internship at a radio station so that you learn about the business and operation of radio. The second would be to start your own Web-based radio station, streaming the kind of programming that you want to broadcast. That way, anyone in the world can listen to your programming and you don't need an FCC license. You will eventually have to pay fees to ASCAP and BMI for the music rights, however.

Your library might have books on radio station operations. Ask a librarian for assistance.

Good luck!

Whoa, those are some big plans. Do you have any experience in radio? Do you have a large trust fund to spend on equipment?

Try joining the student radio station at a nearby college. They usually don't pay and you have to work your way up in the ranks, but it is a good way to meet people and to get your music out to the world. This will also expose you to the business, letting you see what it takes to run your own and also giving you the experience you would need to get a job at another station if you decide not to start your own after all.

Easy. Dump several million into this idea and plan on losing money for AT LEAST 3 years as you build your audience and as you build your clientele. You said you want a small station? Well you still are going to have to throw a very large amount of money either errecting a transmitter stick or renting one. From reading your posting I assume you are fresh out of high school and most likely dont have the millions it takes to start a real station. My advice, go to www.live365.com and start your own FREE internet radio station.

I think you would have to get a license from the FCC first or something, besides that I'm not sure though.

Here's some info I think might help though: http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/
