what is the best free anti-virus software?

from achristian520 to great_firefox didn't really help at all. of the three the last at least gave useful advice but i already have firefox and don't have a virus. i just want more protection

I would recommend AOL Active Virus Shield. It catches more viruses than the other free options like AVG. My other problems with AVG include the fact that they actually do not allow you to use it on more than one computer, and also there is no way to temporarily pause or disable while playing a game for example.

hi, perhaps you can try norton to remove the virus and protect your PC, but you need to pay for the software.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.
besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.
firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.

I use Avast home version, www.avast.com it works awesome and doesnt slow your system down, checks internet, p2p etc... was a suggestion from a good IT guy and its free!
