I'm going to college because I enjoy learning and because I want to go into scientific research (kind of gotta go to college for that... and grad school, too).

A lot of people go to college because they think they'll earn more money. That's just silly. While the averge lifetime earnings of a college graduate are higher than those of a high school graduate, the difference is about equal to the average cost of a college education. It's simply not a good financial investment. And Bill Gates and Steve Jobs both dropped out of college, so not having a college education clearly does not make it impossible to succeed financially.

To me there are two valid reasons to go to college. One, you enjoy learning for its own sake. Or two, you want to persue a career that requires you have a college eduation. Either way, it should be because you enjoy the education or career, not because "you have to" or because it will make you "successful," or "not a screw-up," or other such nonsense. Go because you want to go, or because you need to go in order to do something you want to do.

In some or most ways, college opens more options and opportunities. It trains you to be well-rounded, socially comfortable to work with others, and become specialized in a certain field (i,e. psychology=therapists or psychologists, nursing=nurses or nurse practitioners, counseling=school counselors, marriage&family counselors, etc.) But don't get me wrong, college does not guarantee your success, it depends on your motivation and determination. So you can be successful without college and with college. But college degrees are in demand, you will be most likely considered for a job than someone who doesn't. Just consider college, but before you go, make sure u are dedicated to devoting your time and mind to school and decide on a major that you would love doing and provide financial security, not saying boocoos of dollars, but something comfortable. Some people go to school just for personal interest. I was once in a class with a woman who was in her 50's and she was working on her 4th degree, she was a PROFESSIONAL student. Yes there is a such thing. So do some evaluating, some meditating and see what you come up with. Either way u will be fine, but don't get mad at competition if you don't go to school. Best wishes

The reason I went is because I wanted to fullfill my life time dream of being a teacher. Also if you look at todays society you cant find a good job with just a high school diploma. You can get some jobs but not enough that you will not struggle. I wish you the best and hope this helps

To excel in life! Trust me, I did as little as possible in high school, didn't have a care in the world except for my dishwashing job. Fast forward 20 years and, although I don't wash dishes anymore, I still have gone from dead end job to dead end job, and now I'm 36, just starting to work on my B.S. degree and wishing I went to college right after high school. Do yourself the favor... invest the time before it's too late!

If you are confused about what you want to do with your life, then college maybe the best place for you right now. Just start out with an undeclared major. Think of it this way, what other environment can you explore a multitude of different careers,

Try to think about what your passion is. If you don't have any or can't make any money off it, then start thinking about what you are really talented at. If you still can't think of anything, then go to college. People go to college for two reasons: 1. to get a job that makes mores money or 2. to develop their intellect and quench their thirst for knowledge. Most of us are in it for reason #1.

You should go to college and get a degree, even if later you don't need it, than having to do crappy jobs because you didn't go to college, and wondering when you have lost your young years why you were so lame not to go to college when you were 18,
