Yes! I think that Nobu, along with the Chairman, shaped Sayuri's life. Mameha wanted Nobu to be Sayuri's danna all along, and the thought of being with Nobu distressed Sayuri to no end.
Nobu cared for Sayuri in his own way, but Sayuri was brave enough to want more in life than a heartless arrangement. Also, because of Nobu, when Sayuri was with the Chairman, she pretty much quit being a normal geisha and was only there to serve her danna.
I think they downplay Nobu's role in the movie, but in the book he was one of the main characters.

First of all i LOVED the book (and the movie) but the truth is that .... I'm not sure. Here are my arguments:
The chairman was barely in the book (physically) but Chiyo thought about him constantly so he was in the book a lot as an imagination
but nobu was the constant physical and financial support that she needed so .....
i guess maybe he was!

Along with Sayuri, the Chairman and Mameha, yes. He appears throughout the book and plays an important role in the plot.

I would consider him a main character. He was a major part of her life. His part in the book was very important.
