1. find out what is causing the sleeplessness.
2. Find an activity that makes you sleepy.
3. Warm milk.
4. Stay away from caffeine at night.
5. Stay away from stressors at night.
6. If necessary, use a reliable sleeping aid, but make sure you have the full 8 hours to sleep.
7. Also, try not to drink too many liquids before bed. Not trying to be silly, but getting up to go too often disturbs your sleep cycle

I know what you mean. After I have been answering questions here on Yahoo! Answers for awhile, I have to change gears before I can get to sleep. What I usually do is grab an old VHS video of something absolutely ridiculous like The Mole People, or Godzilla and Monster Zero or no, not Wallace and Gromit! But you know what I mean, something even like the 1931 black and white classic, Dracula, with Bela Lugosi (sp?) and all... it is such a friendly film, by now, I've memorized the script, you can nod right off and then you will have to crawl upstairs to bed. I try to find something that will bore me to tears or that I can laugh at... and then I just let my whole body relax and enjoy it. It's wind-down time for this writer. Then I call it a day when I can't keep my eyes open for another minute, and when I get up to my bedroom, the minute my head hits the pillow it"s ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! This is sent to you with good energies from Chris in South Portland, Maine, U.S.A., and I hope I have given you an inspired idea about how to chill out in the wee hours!

When I can't sleep, I stay up until I can sleep. The next day I get up early like I normally would, and even though I'm really tired all day, I fall asleep that night just fine. Sometimes your body's sleep cycle gets out of whack, but if you let yourself get tired, your body will naturally put itself back in order. It's hard not to take a nap when you're exhausted after not sleeping, but if you resist it, you will be fine the next day. When I'm really desperate, I take 1/2 of an Ambien tablet. Your doctor should give you a prescription if you ask. Unfortunately, sometimes medication is the best answer. Good luck. I know insomnia is lousy.

I do not often if ever read answeres before I answer, but I have read most of these, as it is a pet subject of mine. There are lots of reasons why a person cannot, or thinks rather, they cannot sleep. One is depression. Two, is a fast mind which will never shut off. Three is the need to escape the bordom of bieng awake too long to live in your own mind. I have been taking a mild, very mild. last rung on the ladder, pill to sleep for years. I love them, and yet feel captivated with this country u.k. control. In Spain i can buy them over the counter, and do. I would rather take a couple of pills which are in and out of your sysem within the hour, (so weak ya can override them), than drink my self to sleep. But, no one ever died from lack of sleep. After three four nights and days awake, everyone will sleep. It is just can you take that long aware....awake. I cannot. I need to escape, because i am not happy where I am, but I am changing that, and leaving the ******* u.k. and getting myself some freedom, and fresh air and fresh food. Good luck. But do not resort to the pills. It is far better to suffer and drink horlicks and stay awake days, than to take a Zopiclone, and drift into a wonder ful marvelouse world of positive thought, and warmth.....I would not wish the addiction on a dog. Stay off pills. please. Go and dance, long walk, sex, anything but pills. unless you have loads of money then **** the u.k. doc, fly to spain bring loads in and sleep when you choose, and have a ball. xxg ood luck.

I just love your other answers - are people really that non-caring?
I can't believe someone actually suggested sex! Jeese!

Did they ask you how your feeling? No! I am - are you stressed
out? Sometimes anxiety causes sleeplessness. Your mind
races & you just do not sleep. You must get to the root of the
problem here - telling you to use Lunesta or Ambien is fine, but
just why do you feel this way is what I want to know.

Is this an on-going problem? or just recent?

You may want to see your Dr. for meds - you could be depressed
this also causes loss of sleep. I know - it happened to me.
You need real answers for real problems.

I hope you get in to see your Dr. & tell him how you are feeling!
Be honest - it doesn't get you anywhere if you make stuff up.

hey there, i have also read some answers to your question and believe it or not, a sex session with or without partner really does work wonders.
Do you have things on your mind? If yes then you have to deal with them.
Unfortunetly the gp will not write out a prescription for sleepers so thats not really an option.
Herbal tea and warm milk and a good book works wonders....i should know as work nights!

Oh and dont dismiss the strumming or sex thing. It really helps
