Copyright means that the project has been registered to a copyrighter... even if you send the project to yourself in the mail, get it postmarked, and DON"T open it, it is copyrighted. All it means is that it belongs to you and if someone tries to steal your idea, you can sue because it is copyrighted to you.

Published means that the manuscript has been purchased by a publisher for the purpose of mass distribution of the product in order to sell it.

Copyright means that the material is legally protected and is owned by a person or corporation. Published means that a company has taken the work and printed it and hopefully distributed it.

If a book or other material has been published then it is automatically copyrighted. I can't imagine your old books don't have a copyright imprint, unless someone tore out those pages. Devan's posting is not ony incorrect but confusing to say the least. Trust me that I have told you correctly.

Devan is right--with an exception. As soon as a person writes something it is copywritten by her. She doesn't even need to send it to herself.
I, however, am assuming that you are doing a research paper and need dates for your bibliography. Rarely there is no copywrite date (on cheap copies). However, there is always a publisher's name somewhere.
