You know what "pledge" means right? A pledge is like a promise. You know what "allegiance" means right? Allegiance means loyalty. So, the pledge of allegiance is a promise to be loyal and true to the flag and the republic and everything it stands for. Get it?

Red Skelton was a comedian many years ago. He often spoke the pledge of allegiance and recorded his commentary on what it means. Here is the text.

I Me; an individual; a committee of one.
Pledge Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity.
Allegiance My love and my devotion.
To the Flag Our standard; Old Glory ; a symbol of Freedom; wherever she waves there is respect, because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts, Freedom is everybody's job.
United That means that we have all come together.
States Individual communities that have united into forty-eight great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose. All divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that is love for country.
And to the Republic Republic--a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern.
For which it stands And government is the people; and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.
One Nation
Under God One Nation--meaning, so blessed by God.
Indivisible Incapable of being divided.
With Liberty Which is Freedom; the right of power to live one's own life, without threats, fear, or some sort of retaliation.
And Justice The principle, or qualities, of dealing fairly with others.
For All For All--which means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine.

Read it a figure for yourself:
I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen.

It means you pledge to subvert your will to those in power; originally was intended to prove that you no longer supported or considered yourself a subject of the Sovereign of the British Empire.
The earlier pledge of the British (mostly Tories) and supporters of the Crown who emigrated to Canada is above.

"I swear loyalty to the United States of America. And to the people for which it stands, one nation, under God, individable, with freedom and fairness for all."

hope that helps!

It means nothing. The last time i did it was in elementary school. And even than, i never said it. It lame, and worthless.
