Actually, it was SBC buying out ATT and taking the ATT name.

The merger was announced back in March 2006, so the full effect won't be until next year, provided the regulatory hurdles are passed.

Yes, the merger puts Cingular Wireless fully into the hands of AT&T. Strange, when AT&T, prior to being bought out, sold off its wireless unit to Cingular. So, when SBC bought out AT&T, they only acquired the LD and business portfolios. They felt they needed to have something more than part ownership of a wireless outfit. Thus, acquiring their partner.

at&t did buy bellsouth. at least they put up a bid. i'm not sure if it's cleared the s.e.c. yet. strangely enough at&t and bellsouth were once the same company. ma bell was broken up decades ago over monopoly fears. the two companies became at&t and bellsouth.
