Make the denominators ( those numbers on the bottom) the same. Then add the numerators (those numbers on the top) Then you can reduce the final number.

Remember Numerators (north) are on top
Denominators (down) are on the bottom.

For esample

1/4 +1/2 =
2/8 + 4/8 = 6/8 = 3/4

You must find a common denominator!
3/4 + 4/5 =?
what is the smallest number you can divide both 4 and 5 into? if you take your largest denominator,,in this case 5..and start multiplying it..like 5 times2=10
5 times 3 = 14 5 times 4 =20
the only one that 4 ( the other denominator goes into evenly is 20

__ set it up like this
3/4 = 20
___+
4/5 = 20
then divide the 4 into the 20 ..goes 5 times then you multiply the 5 times the 3 and put that (15) on the top line ( numerator) then.. 5 into20 goes 4 times 4 times 4 is 16 and you put that as the numerator over the bottom denominator 16_over the 20_. then you just add them. the answer =

31/20 or 1 and11/20
of course if you have the same denominators..simple just add..and then reduce. like this

2/5 + 3/5 would equal 5/5 . and that equals 1

7/12 + 9/12 would equal 16/12 or 1and 4/12 . 4/12 can be reduced to 1/3 so the answer is 1 and 1/3 you see? 16 /12 is reduced because 12 goes into 16 one time with a remainder of 4 . so... 1 and 4/12
then the 4/12 can be reduced to 1/3.
If the answer was say 5 /12..it would stay at that because they are not numbers divisible by each other.

add any whole numbers you had with the fractions also.
as 1 2/3 + 3 4/3...the answer to this would be 4 and 6/3,,then reduce....3 into 6 goes 2 times ..so your fraction becomes a whole number of 2. then the 3+1=4..plus your 2 (from the reduced fraction) so the answer is 6.

you need to find a common denominator first. for instance 1/4 + 2/3

find the lowest common denominator. IN this case it is 12, so you would create the fractions again using the denominator of 12. to get to 12 from 4 you multiply by 3, which would mean 1/4 = 3/12 and for 2/3 you would multiply by 4 so 2/3 = 8/12

from there you add the numerators

so 1/4 + 2/3 = 3/12 + 8/12 = 11/12

hope this helps

Find common denominators then add the numerators and then reduce if necessary.

Ex.

Say you 1/4 and 2/5 and you have to add them. Well, by inspection 20 would be the least common denominator. So you just multiply by the number you need for that fraction to equal 20. For 1/4 you multiply top and bottom by 5 resulting in 5/20. For 2/5 you would multiply top and bottom by 4 resulting in 8/20. You can now add the numerators and keep the same denominator. 5/20 + 8/20 = 13/20. In this case you cannot reduce and that would be your answer.

When adding fractions, find a common denominator.

Ex: 1/3 + 1/4
1/3 = 4/12 .......1/4 = 3/12
so, add 4/12 to the 3/12 which equals 7/12

The common denominator for 3 and 4 is 12, hence changing the fractions to 12ths. Then you can add them since they equal the same amount as the 1/3 + 1/4 problem.

First, they need to have common denominators (that's the bottom number). Then you add the numerators (top number) together and put that total over the bottom number.

example:

3/4 + 1/4 = 4/4 (and 4/4 = 1)

If they are different, you'll need to convert one of them so they have the same denominator.

3/8 + 1/4 = ??
1/4 is the same as 2/8, so...
3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8

hope that helps!

you have to get to where both fractions have the same denominator (whatever multiply the bottom by to get the common denominator, you also have to multiply numerator by); then, you add the numbers on top.

ex:
2/3+1/4=8/12+3/12=11/12

good luck!

Multiply to get a commom denominater, then add numerators. thats it.

1/4 + 2/3
1/4(3) + 2/3(4)
3/12+ 8/12= 11/12
