Yes they care, and they need sleep just like you do ! The best way to accomplish this is to put you're lights on a timer. That way they get into rhythm. You should always allow natural light in the morning to illuminate the room before they come, but at night it's not that critical. I usually have mine go off just after I go to bed at night.

It is essential for a marine or planted tank, but all other fish require only ambient light. If you do use a light, put it on a timer and leave it on for no more then twelve hours (8 is better or you get a lot of algae growth

i have an aquarium full of goldenfishes and before i bought one i asked some advice from the pet and fish shop how to take care of them. i bought a full set of running a tank and ten baby goldfishes. the only advice i followed even up to now is to switch the lights on during the day and be sure to switch it off during the night and you dont need a timer to do the switching. within a month s time i have to gave away the ten fishes as they grew out so fast and so big and the fishes were laying eggs as fast as they can and eating them too. once a month clean out the tank and switch the light on and switch it off between 8-9 pm before you go to sleep. lights running whole day and night can be stressful to fishes also. they need to sleep and mate and fertilize their eggs!

why don't you ask them? no, i'm just kidding. well i have two fish tanks and the light is almost always on in both. i don't think that the fish care. but with a light you can see them better. good luck.

Tropical fish spend a lot of their time in shallow sunny water anyway where they get a lot of light so I would say that it doesn't bother then.
Most life in the ocean stops at the point where light and warmth stop. As long as its not blinding and you turn it off at night I should say it doesn't matter

They like it, just make sure you switch it off when you go to bed at night because they need to sleep too, and wont if the light is on

My fish worship the light, dancing circles under it wearing seaweed headdresses. The plecostomus seems to be their priest. The chanting from the tank gets really distracting. Most disturbing is when they sacrifice one of their tankmates to their little god above the aquarium.

It's more for your viewing pleasure (and to aid the growth of live plants) more than anything. Light will also spur the growth of Algae if left on too long so be careful.
