There's a salt water parrot fish and a fresh water. I assume you're talking about the fw one.

They're a hybrid(cross bred not "man made") cichlid. No one really knows what they're cross bred with though, it's been kept a secret. They are not brackish water fish, but will tolerate a bit of aquarium salt in a tank. (Not all fish tolerate salt)
10 gal is too small for one. Need at least a 30 gal tank for one. They can grow anywhere from 6-12 inches. Some can be aggressive. I have 7 of them in various tanks, they rule the tank, but are not overly aggressive. The only thing I've ever lost was neons. They're fine alone or with a mate. Very good personable fish, just need a bigger tank for it. If you wanna eat one, s'pose you could :)

Parrot fish are a hybrid from 2 different cichlids, one from Africa and one from South America. I think one is a red terror and the other I can't spell it right.
I had a few and most of them were nice, other then tearing up the tank to lay their eggs, (which I never saw.) We had a smaller one that killed off a catfish. Before I knew the fish died, the bad water weaken off most of the other fish in my tank.
Parrot fish are intelligent and like to watch people. Fish do need salt in their tanks. I use a hand-full for every 10 gallons. You can use either fish salt or canning salt, never use table salt.
A parrot fish would be too small to eat. Besides, you don't know what is in the fish food that you give it. As long as the animal isn't going to be use for human consumption, the ingredients that go into the fish food isn't regulated, or not very much.

uh... those are the man-made ones right? i'm pretty sure they are freshwater, can go in 10gal, are agressive, need some friends and they taste bad. just ask the person selling the parrot fish, they'd know everything i told you. except maybe the last one... good luck!
