It's worked fine since I got it in November, but for some reason recently the DVD burner won't burn onto DVD rw or CD rw. It'll start out just fine, but about 10% into the process, it'll say there was a read error. The only suggestion it gives is to try a different disc.

The laptop is a Toshiba.

If after system restore and your DVD burner keeps on acting that way, then I would say that the problem is hardware in nature. There are actually other factors that influence the behaviour of your DVD Burner. Of course one is the DVD burning software per se. Conflicts arise if you have more than DVD burning softwares installed. Having both Sonic for instance and AnyDVD/CloneDVD will affect your DVD burning time, much more if an anti-virus is running in the background - plus you have little free hard disk space left for the temporary files to be stored.

Anyways, as I care about my laptop, I prefer to burn my movies via external DVD burners. It's really expensive to do hardware replacements in laptops.

The DVD drive may be dirty, try using a cleaning disc (found where you can buy blank CD's/DVD's ex: CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City). If this does not fix the problem, then you may need to consider repalcing the drive. Check if your laptop is still under warranty.

It sounds like your DVD burner has gone bad. Believe it or not this is more common than one would think with these type of drives. Time to contact your manufacturer/retailer and see if they will replace the drive.

Call up Toshiba and get a replacement. Don't waste your warranty.

I had the same thing happen to me. Mine had just wore out and quit working. I had to buy a new one.
