i think its called a sprain or....a tearing of a ligament

It is called a partial tear if it is only partially torn (if very mild, may also be commonly called a sprain). A complete tear may be a called a rupture or complete tear. Sorry this answer isn't more exciting. ...but it is what it is....

A torn ligament. I tore my PCL in the left knee and the ACL in the right. I fell again and tore the ACL in the left a few years later! They are no fun!
