I remember of one that you could'nt tell what it was untill you stare at it for a while and then the statue of liberty would stand out.

They're called stereograms, and the most famous company to make them is called "Magic Eye".

A number of art styles can do this. But what is widely known is Pointism (a zillion dots that make up an object) and Op-Art (optical illusions that can cause "afterimage" effects and impressions that doesn't exist).

I think it would be a contemporary style art, and in that you would have a lot inside that category. Picasso painted this style. I took two dimensional design, and one of our assignments was like a Picasso painting, it was fun to do, and figure out how to create it.

well i dont know about sterograms or whatever but in my art classes we call them optical arts.
