THE WORLD CUP FINAL 2010
ENGLAND VS ARGENTINA

only if they can find a consistent goal scorer and shore up their defense a little. and permanently ditch the 4-5-1 if rooney's going to be that guy! he needs someone to play off of. rooney is not a creator, he's a finisher. i will never understand why sven wouldn't play peter crouch when he's a proven scoring threat and rooney was so obviously struggling as a lone striker. sven lost the portugal match for england through inept management. i seriously thought 2006 would be england's year.
but they are always contenders. a replacement for beckham will be needed as well. someone else in the middle with lampard to control the flow of the game. and someone to take free kicks. you'll never replace beckham in that capacity but i've seen a few come close (roberto carlos, juninhio).
finally i'd say get a consistent goalie. robinson is able enough. but stick with him. give him time to develop. meaning lots of caps.
go england 2010!

anything can happen in 4 years! that means 4 years for a team to acquire some pretty awesome young talents, that means 4 years to make a team better, or worse...We never know what'll happen or how things will be then. one team could go from the bottom to the top. a team from the top to the bottom. england right now, has the same chance as anyone else (not literally, but you know what i mean) to win the worlc cup in 2010. it's quite possible, but also very possible for many other teams as well.

Honestly? No. The greatest problem with England's side doesn't lie with the side or the manager, by and large what I see the problem being is with the press. Their continual urge to build a cult of personality around the player who will 'win the world cup for England' and the drive to then ensure that this player never fades from the side holds them back. McClaren has started well, dropping Beckham, placing Gerard on the right side where has consistently performed well for his club recognises both that Beckham's time has come and gone and that to play Gerard and Lampard in the center means you have two people doing the same job. Also recognising that Hargreaves best role was where he performs so well for Bayern was where to play him. All of which was done in the face of the press. He now has a balanced side with both right and left midfield, especially when Joe Cole is fit with which to move forward. What's needed now is a truly creative midfielder/forward to supply the imagination any world class side needs, in the role of Zidane, Bergkamp, Morientes or even Sheringham who's clever instinct and ability to play diagonal passes through defences would unlock them. This is something not in Rooney's repertoire, he drives at defences, if he's given the space, something most international sides won't do.It's my personal opinion that he needs to recognise Rio Ferdinand as being a liability, his lack of focus, inability to hold formation, occasional ball watching just leads me to thinking this, his performance again Celtic was just another example. Jamie Carragher has been about the most dependable English club performer along with John Terry and has suffered most like Hargreaves from never being played in his natural position, centre back. If McClaren has the guts to stick to his guns and ignore the English press who have little or no actual football experience, (sorry but watching football for 10-20 years doesn't qualify you to second guess a national manager, nor does pandering to the masses for their favourite players by setting them up as gods then knocking them down) to ignore them if he loses a meaningless friendly when trying to find out if another player can fill a role he needs to figure out then he can go far. Where that truly creative mind will come from I don't know, yes, they need to solve their penalty inability too, it's not a heart thing, it's a mind thing, English footballers have all the guts in the world, that's just not what defines a good penalty taker in a situation like that.

Let me add this rejoinder, I'm a Scotland and Arsenal fan, I can it's essential if you want to really know/figure out if England can win the world cup ever to analyze your side methodically and without letting emotion get the better of you. Sure, England do have world class players, not as many as you think but they have them, I've named them, Cole, Terry, Lampard, Gerrard the rest are good, some are very flawed, not just in personality. What you don't need is another striker who can't be dropped, or even anyone who can't be dropped.

Look at Alf Ramsey's winning side of 1966, he dropped and ignored the press about Jimmy Greaves, the best striker of his time. He knew that if you fit the system, that was all that was required. Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters did this. He was revolutionary in playing a side without wingers, 'Alf's wingless wonders.' All in the face of constant press criticism.

To sum up, a creative player, recognition of players best/true roles and a total disregard of the press's utterances are what you need.

the answer is no.the english have always been paper lions which everybody fears.but are actually quite harmless.look at it this way the last time england won the world cup was way back in 1966 and they still act like its yesterday. They are an overated side the same as Germany who are more proud of being N#3in this years world cup than in 2002 where they were 2nd....if you ask me it will take quite a long while if ever for england to win a major prize

So many IFs... soccer it never made with "if" and "but"... and mostly how can anyone predict what is going to happen in the WC 2010?

England, like most of the Countries around the world, did not even start the qualification process... they do not know if they are going to participate to the Finals... they do not even know who are their opponents in the qualifications!

England may start to build the Team for the World Cup, but they need first to focus on Europe 2008: that is the first step to create a solid and reliable group of players to work and to prepare for further competitions.

Personally I have so many doubts about McLaren capabilities (like I have it for Italy's Donadoni) and he needs to show concrete results in the Euro 2008... in order to continue his journey to the World Cup.

IF................
if you support Chelsea you obviously know nothing about football.
Of course England will not win the World Cup..more chance of you landing on the moon....they will not win a major tournament in your lifetime or your grandchildrens' grandchildren's lifetime, so keep believing in the Tooth Fairy and Santa Clause as well if you like but get real on Football!
