I I have worked for many years at major supermarkets in South Florida, and have continually been insulted by management the entire time. I have been called stupid on numerous occasions. One manager asked if I was "holding hands" with another male employee in the parking lot, because I was talking too long talking with a friend of mine outside. Apparently, he was trying to imply that I was gay (which I'm not). Another time, I was working in a major toy store, and was told to go outside in the hot weather, and get carts. After I came in, the assistant manager commented that I smelled like "sh*t", because I was sweating profusely. Can employers say things like this?

I would take matters like this up with corprate, you cant really say anything about the holding hands thing if you were on the clock when you did that cause you werent supposed to be talkin to friends instead of working, but the stupid and smell like sht things were unneccsary comment that they could have kept to themselves and some people might consider it verbal abuse, next time it happens kindly tell your manager I dont insult you and treat you like a child dont do it to me, if theres a problem with my preformance telling me in a polite manner will get the picture across alot better because i wont be focusing on your petty insults.

No, they should not get away with it. Being called "stupid" is not acceptable. You should contact the corporate office, especially if the problem persists. In the meantime, do your work to the best of your ability and only chat with friends on your breaks rather than on company time so that they cannot place any blame on you.

Absolutely NOT! If they think they can say something and you never complain to higher management they will continue to do it every time because they believe you'll never complain. Do not give them that power. Also a lot of people do this because it makes them feel better about themselves. If it's not enough to really complain above their heads, laugh it off or make it like it's a joke on your end.. let it roll off your back like water on a duck. Do NOT give them the power of making you feel bad about yourself because that's what they're hoping. Apparently your boss is feeling bad (or guilty about something) about himself so he's doing what he can to belittle you in order to feel better. So don't let him have that power over you! Other wise go above his head and make a complaint. They'll write him/her up and put it in their file and confront your manager when they have the chance. Usually they don't tell the manager who said what so they start to thinking someone heard and told on him.

First of all you have to be able to prove that this is happening, Tape record it or something, then you need to report it to the company, this persons boss and up the line, then if it doesnt stop you would have grounds to sue that company and poss. the manager that said those things to you.
