Curling is a great sport, played by two teams of 4 each. It is called curling probably because when the ice is prepared they apply drops of water evenly accross the surface (called pebbling) and when the stone is thrown down the ice with a spin on it, it will 'curl' in the the direction of the spin. Sweeping with brooms infront of the rock will help it maintain speed, keep it on the line the thrower intended, and keep the ice free of debris a stone can pick up (called picking actually) and throw the rock in a different direction.

It is a very strategic game, and a high skill game. Some games are won and lost by fractions of an inch. Also, it can be a very hard game on the body if you have to sweep a lot!!

Brandon M got so close! It is not a puck, but roughly 70 pounds of granite called a stone that gets pushed by guy or gal 1 on a 4 person team. It was invented, it is thought, in Scotland a very long time ago. It is similar to bowls, or bocce if those are familiar. Curling is actually a difficult sport to play because of the types of throws down the ice, the pattern of the brooms that helps the stone reach its destination due to friction processes and physics of which I know nothing. I've heard it called the equivalent of chess as far as strategy, which team will throw the hammer (the last stone), the distance between the teams' stones...etc.

There was a team from Brainerd, MN that went to the Olympics. Yeah for MN!
