No, it much more crude than that, they actually SCRAPE it off.
Not only do they not use anaesthesia, but they dont use scapels or sharp knives, they use what ever they have available to them. That may be a piece of broken glass, or a piece of jagged metal or a ground rock. This is not performed by doctors with sharp scapels under hospital conditions.

Yep, they cut it off so the woman gets no enjoyment out of sex when she grows up, that way she's less likely to cheat or have her own life or whatever. I'm really not sure *why* they do it. Anyway, I've never heard of sewing the vagina shut though, I'd think that would work against men, if ya know what I mean.

From what I understand there are two (2) types of procedures. There is circumcision where they actually remove the "offending" clitoris and then there's another type where they close the opening of the vagina, infibulation, leaving only a small hole where the urine and menstrual blood can escape.

Yes... they usually do it when the girl is around 12 or so, and they do it without anaesthesia.
It's a horrid custom and I hope it is eventually abolished.
