If this is the first time you have set up your aquarium then you need to buy a few cheap fish because they are gonna die for a while. An aquarium needs to set up a biological filter in itself. This is done by bacteria from the pollutants of the fish. Once the fish are able to live for a couple of weeks you can spend more money on more exotic fish. After the biological filter is established all you need to do is change about 40% of the water each week and add alittle aquarium salt. Doing this will eliminate having to add chemicals to your water. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First you need to know (not trying to be mean). Fish is plural for Fish. You can have many fish.... Get it?

You need to get the PH balance and temp of your tank perfect for at least a month. You want to find fish that are compatable. I would go to a good aquarium pet store and talk to one of the employees. They will be able to help you.

Salt or freshwater? Crabs are normally saltwater, might be a few freshies out there somewhere.

As for recommendations, well whatever you like. If you want a variety, then make sure you get community fish. Aggressive ones will be a pain in a community tank. You should make sure to get at least one algae eater(I prefer the plecostomus) and the rest is all up to you.

Well to begin with, the plural form of fish remains fish.
You can start by getting zebra danios. They are very hardy, cheap and survive through various water conditions. Only remember they need to be in a group of 5-6 or more and they need space to swim.
Carbs, ummmm.. you're a beginner so just stick to fish for the time being.
Fish names.. Aqua, Splash, Danny (for danios), whatever you like. I call my fish by their breed.

Guppy is a hardy fish which you should consider with. It is a tropical fish, livebear. Male is more colorful than female. If you dont want to get any fry (baby) just get few male. Because guppy breed like rabbit.
Good Luck

This is a compatibility chart, elsewhere in this site are pictures and requirements of the fish (and what they charge for them). Scan through to see what kind of community appeals to you. All fish are the same amount of work once your tank is running.

If your tank hasn't cycled yet you may want to hold off on getting your fish until it does. To do a fishless cycle (so you don't end up killing your investment) I would recommend doing the following...
