I'm just starting acoustic guitar and I want to know which brands are good, but not expensive, since, after all, i'm just beginning. Then again, I don't want a really cheap kind, either.

That is hard to compromise. The most expensive is Martin, and after that is Taylor. But Taylor guitars can go down cheaper and are affordable and good quality. Ovations are acoustic electric and have a good price range. But either way, if you go really low, no matter what, you'll end up getting one of not very good quality. For cheap guitars I would recomend Fenders, and actually, Yamaha makes good and cheap acoustic guitars.

The Washburn D10S is considered a terrific value for a first acoustic guitar. It can had for around $200 or less, and is one of the best selling value guitars out there. It doesn't sound too bad either! The one important factor you have to remember when buying a first guitar, regardless of brand, is that it should at the very least come with a solid spruce wood top.

Hohner makes a reasonably priced, decent sounding acoustic.

If you want to head towards a nicer instrument, I like Alvarez. (I've had a Yamaha in the past, and it's also a nice instrument, but prefer the Alvarez).

I have four guitars at the moment...and Alvarez acoustic, an Alvarez classical (AC60SC), a 1957 Gibson T-50 (tenor) and a Montana travel.

I gave a nice Hohner to my daughter recently. Go to a music store, and spend some time talking to someone...like a guitar teacher. See what they suggest.

Check out your local Guitar Center. I'm sure you'll be able to find something decent and affordable. Also, get a good case for it. It's not temperature that will warp a guitar neck, it's changes in humidity.
One of the most important things is the "action", that is to say, how hard you have to press the strings to the fret board. It shouldn't take alot of finger pressure to do this.

Go for a Fender or a Yamaha. Both decent, inexpensive starters.

I have a Hohner. It was reasonably priced, especially for a left-handed one, and sounds pretty. The actually improves the sound with age.
