I get freaked out and can't really look at a balloon when someone lets one go because as it goes far...it gets kind of weird for me.

Is this normal or anyone know anything about this?

There are entire dictionaries of just pure phobias so I wouldn't be surprised. On the other hand, you may be experiencing security issues that lay dormant when you were a child. The balloon represents some aspect of your childhood that you could not hold onto (as a balloon is released, you may get the feeling of that aspect of your childhood drifting away again). See a psychologist and have them analyze it for you.

Globophobia is the fear of balloons. I guess since someone has already coined the term, it's more normal than expected.

"Known by a number of names - Globophobia, Fear of Balloons being the most common - the problem often significantly impacts the quality of life. It can cause panic attacks and keep people apart from loved ones and business associates. Symptoms typically include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and overall feelings of dread, although everyone experiences balloon phobia in their own way and may have different symptoms." (CTRN)

There are actually three main kinds of phobias:
~Agoraphobia (fear of particular places or of being out in the open *the one I had :P)
~Social phobias (fear of social situations)
and of course...
~Specific phobias (fear of various specific things, such as snakes or spiders or birds or in your case balloons)

"Phobias are the most common mental disorder in the United States, with about 10% of the population suffering from some sort of phobia." (Education World) So you really aren't alone. ^_^ It's just that different people have different kinds of phobias.

In psychology, there are two main ways of overcoming phobias which are exposure treatments which is facing the phobia first hand until the person gets use to it and counter-conditioning where a person is taught new responses instead of panic like deep breathing exercises.

Lotsa luck with your phobia. There are many cases (like mine!) that has successfully overcame this.
