I would keep the GLS. In the long run, you'll miss all the extra little options that you enjoy on the better model. A base model will just depress you in the end, and the "new"-ness of it will not make up for that. VWs normally have a great lifespan, so take advantage of that quality.

I had a VW jetta and the electric system started going out on me around 75-80,000 miles. My radio stopped working, the back door lock stopped working, and my dashboard was not as lit up. When I was looking for a new car, both cars salesman asked me how my electric system was with the VW. Apparently this is a common defect and it is not covered with the warranty. In addition, a common complaint is problems with the A/C, coolant fluid leaking, also not covered with the warranty. I have a toyota Prius now and love it. I had a toyota camry prior to the VW and didn't have any problems at 120,000 miles (just standard maintainence).

I had a VW Jetta and loved it! But when I moved to Maryland in May I decided to trade it in for a sweet lil' Honda Accord ...thought that I would try something new for a change...I've been driving VW's since highschool...anyway I think my Jetta may have been water-logged from living in Seattle for so long.

i really love the Jetta's
all we have ever owned were VW's & Aldi's (except when we had a mercedes benz and TOTALED it when it was 3 years old....my husband was swating a misquito out the window and hit a tree..ARG!)
we have one now (Jetta) that we bought in 1995 that still runs great....almost 200,000 miles on that baby and she'll still outrun the common american new auto....good gas mileage too. And we still drive it on long trips, and trust it as much as we trust our 2 newer model cars....all the work its ever had is regular maintence & a clutch & an alternater....but considering the miles it has on it those too are regular maintence

Have a 2003 Jetta and it is great.
Not as good gas mpg as I would like for the size of car but it is a nice driving car. Don't need the turbo just eats gas.
GREAT CAR !!!
