Gender roles are culturally based and time-bound meaning roles change through time and through different places.

It use to be that the women stayed in the house, had kids and took care of those kinds but today women are out of the houses and working which has its own pros and cons because today women have more influence in the society but the children aren't as given as much attention as they use to be.

Gender role switching is also happening because now there are some families who have the dads stay at home and the mothers work.

This gender role view only pertains to the basic family unit but from here we can see how these roles affects the whole society itself.

Gender is the roles we LEARN. Sex is the genetic part that we automatically have. Sex is different from gender. Women learn to be emotional and compassionate. Men learn to be hard and strong. Women learn to be petty and beautiful, men learn to be lax and rugged. Little girls are given Barbie's and boys are given Tonka trucks. This is all learned, the behavior is largely learned rather than natural. This learning of the gender roles starts from infancy.

Anyway, gender roles have obviously changed dramatically within the last century, however, the expectations on men are mostly the same. However, women now days are expected to be super-women.

Because of lousy men we have to take care of the house, kids, family, work, and look beautiful while doing it!!!! It is crap! We have to do everything if we want to survive. We can't depend on men anymore because they just want to sit around and drink beers all day... Okay not all of them but too many. Women are more androgynous now days, we play all fields of the gender roles, working, taking care of the kids, and being beautiful.

Gender roles are culturally determined & differ widely from culture to culture.
My bet is that women get a raw deal from these gender roles all over the world

In history, there's volumes to speak of. In this day and age however, the point is moot as both genders assume a variety of roles that were traditionally reserved for the other or opposite, if you will. I'd love to take a crack at being a house husband myself. It seems like a challenge that I can fulfill without ever having to fly out of town.
