I know that the laws are going to (or already have changed). Do you need anything more than a drivers' license to go between the US and Canada?

Right now, I think a driver's license will do.

Next year, you will need your passport to return to the US. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

If you're going before December 31, 2006, you can still use your birth certificate and a picture ID. After December 31, 2006, you can still use the birth certificate and picture ID if you're driving into and out of Canada, but if you're flying you'll need a passport. Beginning December 31, 2007, only a passport will do no matter how you travel. WARNING: If you don't have a birth certificate, be prepared to be held up for two hours or more by Canadian Immigration Service while they verify your citizenship.

We just went to Canada, all we needed was to show our drivers licenses. They did say that in a few months, we may need to show passports, but it has not became a necessity yet.

You're best of with a pass port as they are getting stricter at the border. You can call Canada Customs and Immigration ahead and see what you need just to be sure.
