In other words is it inappropriate to listen to rap music if you are trying to be a Christian or do people just say that?

The Bible notes that what you take in with your eyes and ears has an affect on you, kind of like the old computer rule :"Garbage in, garbage out". It is not the type of music but the lyrics that can have an affect on you. Rap is not bad but some is. Rock is not bad but some is. Country is not bad but some is. Do you get my point?

The bible of course did not say anything about rap music. Some of the rap music I have heard, Christian people would not want to listen to. That also goes for some books, TV shows, etc. Rap music as a category is not anti-Christian.

Are you trying to be a Christian or trying to live a righteous life? If you believe in Jesus Christ as your savior and accept that, then you are a Christian. What you listen to will not change that. We all need to work a little harder to live a righteous life. That includes following the commandments and loving one another. Listening to rap music will not hinder any of these things.

There is an admonition to avoid the appearance of evil, but rap music isn't mentioned anywhere--obviously.

What are you getting out of rap music? How does it affect or change the way you feel about things? Do you experience sexual feelings or feel compelled to commit violent acts during or after listening?

If you don't it's probably not harming you in any particular way, but remember the lyrics can be very hateful and violent and demeaning to women and other people. Is this part of who and what you are?

Only you can answer that. Personally, as a Christian, I wouldn't want to listen to rap music, but there are many other factors that influence that decision. My age, the fact I am a white guy and my culture being some of them.

No, there is absolutely nothing in the bible about not listening to a specific kind of music. All this discussion really starts in the early years of Christianity, taken on from Aristotle's and Plato's view that certain kinds of music influence ethos.

Western music, in which rap is included, stems from an old tradition whose origins are associated to church music - Gregorian chant, for example.

What I mean to say is that the whole discussion is based on church doctrine (Catholic, Protestant, etc.) not on the bible.

One of the earliest Christian writers to bring about this issue was Augustine, who was very resistant to music for pleasure.

My answer is no. There is nothing like that in the bible itself. But you know people can and do use the bible to say all sorts of things.

Take care!

I've never heard of this before. And if I'm correct, I'd even go as far as to say that there is Christian rap. I think the only reason someone would say that is if you're listening to bad rap, or rap with lots of swearing.

Well, since rap music was not around at the time the bible was written, it would be hard for it to warn you against it. I think that you should judge for yourself the content of the rap you want to listen to... if the lyrics are offensive or include swearing, that would probably be contrary to your beliefs. But rap music in and of itself shouldn't be considered bad.

No, it doesn't say that exactly, lol, but there are things saying you shouldn't in any way tempt yourself to sin, or listen to vulgarities... It can be inappropriate, obviously, when you are listening to things that are hateful, and talk about sex and disrespects women. That's just obvious, of course. So I guess it is wrong to listen to some rap music. Try R&B if you're unsure, lol...

I do not believe it says that anywhere in the bible. There are Christian rap bands. I believe that whereever you heard that they meant bad rap...meaning rap that has a lot of cussing & talks about unGodly things.

There IS such a thing as Christian rap music... However, they tend to focus more on the lyrics and lose the bad attitude...
