Making friends is not as easy as it looks. Sometimes, it may seem like you are the only one in the world with no friends, but there probably isn't a person out there who feels friendless at some point. Have you made an effort to talk to people and invite them to do things? It's hard putting yourself out there - especially hard if you're shy - but it's a necessary evil. Next time you are chatting with someone in the lunch room, or on the school bus, ask them if the wanna catch that new movie flick. Also, join some activities or committees at school. It's a way to socialize and hang out with peeps - get to know 'em - without too much pressure. And if you do join something - don't just sit in the corner and keep to yourself. Talk to people, participate. It's the only way for people to get to know who you really are. Good luck!

Try talking to people in class or at work that you don't normally talk to. It might be easier to start off talking about the subject (in school) or the job you're both employed at (since you two are working at the same place, you obviously would have a few similar interests, right?) Once you can communicate about those things, move onto things that interest you like hobbies and such. Hopefully a friendship can sprout from that!

You're in school so one way to make new friends is to make a list of your interests then join clubs/committees/groups where others share your passion and are willing to discuss these activities with you. Dress appropriately, be sure to smile and laugh, hold eye-contact and nod approvingly when they're speaking (makes them feel good that you're paying attention).

To maintain these new relationships keep in touch by phone, emails, IM or in person. Suggest fun activities because having friends means sharing and doing things. Don't be a complainer or whiner instead be positive. With these new friends you need to be loyal and trustworthy. Stay current with up-to-date topics so when conversing with them you can contribute your intelligent opinions and they'll value you.
P.S. speech/debate/theater classes are good for overcoming shyness.

I can relate because I'm shy to, so what I do is when I see new people that I want to make friends with, I approach them with a compliment and depending on the response I go from there. The important thing is always show yourself friendly and never approach people unless your'e comfortable with them and yourself.

The best way to make a friend is to be one. Also approaching new people will help you overcome your shyness and build up your self-confidence.
