I don't think this a lame question, as some have suggested here.
The fact that the Earth is round would have been really quite obvious to anybody in ancient times who had to travel across plains or across the sea. The fact that distant high objects like mountains and even cloud formations, disappear over horizon and there continues to be a horizon however far you travel, and that horizon is never a sharp turn (as it would be if the world was flat), must have been obvious to thousands of travellers.
The problem was communicating this to the people who actually made the records of such things. Alhtough these people were more educated than the nomads and sailors, they never got to see the phenomena themselves and who is going to believe common peasants or sailors.
In the west, the church stymied every attempt to explain the vagaries of the universe, because for some reason it all had to have been made in perfect order by God. In our case, you could be tortured and executed for espousing such things, so most people kept quiet about any thoughts that might aggravate the church.
I guess the ancient eqyptians were more open-minded.
Note: it is amazing that after 8000 years we still have those idiot creationists, who would still hold back the attainment and spread of knowledge if they had their idiot ways.

The ancient Egyptians were White, not Black. From pre-Dynastic Egypt in 4000 BC all the way through the 24th Dynasty in 725 BC, was White. Any Blacks in Egypt then were slaves or Nubian travellers.
Examination of the mummified remains of the Pharoahs and their kinfolk have proved the prevalence of blonde, brown or reddish hair, as well as bones of the skull and face morphologically typical of White peoples, and decidedly not typical of Blacks.
The first Black Egyptian Dynasty was the 25th, and it was the very last Dynasty before Egypt was conquered by Assyria, and then again by Persia. All the glories that Ancient Egypt brought forth were achieved under the auspices of White rulers. As soon as Blacks gained dominance, Egypt was a goner. That's the racial lesson that history teaches.
Wherever that lesson has not been learned, the same historical tragedy has played itself again with the same results. It's even happening right now, in Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) and in South Africa. While Whites ruled, the country was industrious, creative, energetic, orderly, and well-kept. Once Blacks ascended to dominance, everything started falling apart.
And the pit into which nations fall, when the leadership transitions from a capable race to an incompetent race is almost bottomless... It might take a hundred years, or, with copious outside support, perhaps even longer, but in the end a Black-ruled country always ends up either conquered or in savagery.
Ancient Europeans did know that Earth is round. Aristotle and Erastosthenes both knew it, and Erastosthenes was the (White) man who proved it mathematically.

Troll, troll, troll yer boat...
Over the (curved) horizon, it seems, according to "Nick" above, who made (I believe) a sensible scenario about the difficulty of treating knowledge seriously from a source one doesn't deem credible, such as sailors... and, perhaps, "idiot Christians."
But anyway.
Leave it to a gentleman of Greek extraction (residing in arguably the crown jewel of Greece's colonies, Alexandria - in Egypt if not particularly of Egypt) to noodle out a very accurate estimate of the Earth's circumference.
Eratosthenes was the name, and geometry was his game. He took it for granted the Earth was round - such blessed luck to have gotten this from the formidable Egyptians! - and figured, hey, I've got some vacation time to burn here at my job as Cheif Librarian of the Library of Alexandria, think I'll figure out just how big the world is.
Now, he did this a mere two thousand years ago. Perhaps the Egyptians preceded him by six thousand years, but didn't leave a record, since doing papyrus doesn't keep, and geometry is impractical if you have to chisel your diagrams into granite.
If you're not fortunate enough to know an ancient Egyptian (of any color), check it out below.

Why do you say "black" egyptians? Why are you trying to make your question a racial issue? Why don't you just ask why the White europeans did not know it? What is your point? I don't really think that you want a real answer.

The Egyptians knew because of their association with Joseph who was sold into Egypt. He was taught by his father who was taught by Abraham who got it straight from God. God taught more to father Abraham than most people realize. when Joseph was sold into Egypt he was not very popular. After he helped the Pharaoh understand a dream however he had a lot of pull. The Egyptians were in a hurry to hear anything he had to say. So he taught them about the stars and the heavens and many other things we will never know because it was lost to the sands of time.
So I guess the answer to your question is: the black Egyptians knew because the Jews told them. I bet you didn't see that one coming. Gotcha.

I may be old, but not quite that old. I guess you will have to find someone much older to answer your lame question. One thing you said is correct: "pretty dull." That is what I thought when I read your question.
