From what I've read they cut the actual clitoris-I am thankful its not common practice here-bless the USA

Probably because its a logical question, considering YOU dont even have the answer. Yes, that is what some African female circumcision (also referred to as both Female Genital Cutting and Female Genital Mutilation) involves, but not only that. You may want to read more about it here...

yes they cut it off and yes you can die from it. There is a vital vein running through the clitoris and if cut you can most certainly die.

You are correct. I had a culture class in college and we read that this practice is still going on in rual parts of Africa and still in some other places.
