When the World Wide Web became popular. Prior to that, there were not too many Internet providers around and some of them were flakey.
Back then, you had to configure your modem yourself, get and configure a communications program, and then log into your ISP. From there, you had to use console commands to do things. For example, if you wanted to upload a file somewhere, you would type in the PUT command.
There were some GUI front-ends for FTP and e-mail for Windows 3.1 back then, but usually they were not provided by the ISP.
Those were the 'good old days,' when people didn't advertise on the Internet, trojans and viruses were rare, and there were a lot less idiots wasting bandwidth on stupid things.

When the people who called the nerds - nerds ended up working at McDonalds for life and the nerd was a 100grand earning geek...now if i get a hundread grand a year i wouldn't mind being a nerd.

If you are smart enough, you can LEARN a LOT fromthe "nerds"....IF you want your computer to run smoothly....Remember how you felt the last time your computer wasn't working right??...Ask THEM........
