It is difficult to explain how slavery came to an end in the North because it never had much of a beginning there. The North was largely colonized by religious zealots and outcasts from the mainstream who were by nature individualists and subsistence working class people. Even in New Amsterdam cooperative subsistence was common aside from the dock labourers who still worked without much oversight and thus needed to be trusted. Trust builds respect and respect requires freedoms! Remember also that factories and such were preceded by small mills and foundries which required skill workers!
The South was largely occupied by Indentured Servants, ergo Transported nare do wells, petty criminals, debtors and street riff-raff. Having cleared their debts they were filled with ambition and greed and agriculture was the most marketable commodity, likewise subjecting someone else to the same harsh conditions they suffered or worse elated their petty egos and later racist sterotypes would justify distinguishing them.

Slavery was not used much in the north. Some states outlawed it immediately like Massachusetts. Some states like New York ended it around 1810. New Jersey though is very interesting because they just outlawed slavery when it came to the decendents of slaves. There were still a hand full of very old slaves in New Jersey at the start of the Civil War in the states.

Slavery was not abolished in the North until 1865, with the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment. Many believe the Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves. However, the proclamation did not free any slaves immediately, because it applied only to areas behind Confederate lines and outside of Lincoln's control. Slavery still existed, however, in border states. Therefore, the Thirteenth Amendment was passed.
