This is my first chainsaw, and I've looked in the owner's manual; and nowhere does it give instructions to change the oil. Is there something unique about chainsaws? I constantly have to put oil in it to lubricate the chain; does the bar & chain oil work in the motor?

No oil pan ...
No valves ... HELLO US Citizen!
The oil you mix with the gas lubricates two cycle engines. Remember not to let it set with fuel in it any longer that about a month. The mixture can turn to goop and clog up your carburetor. Before putting it away for the season...dump all the gas out and than start it and let it run out of fuel.

Chain saws run on 2 cycle gas you have to mix the oil into the gasoline can. Pick up some 2cycle mix at the store you bought the saw. the bar and chain oil is only for the bar and chain and that oil is not to be used in the gas. there is no crankcase full of oil. the oil gets burned with the gas and that lubricates the piston and cylinder. make sure to ask someone so you mix the proper amount of oil into the gas they have convenient 1gallon and 2.5 gallon mix in small bottles.

You got to be kidding! Do you wonder why you mix oil in the gas? Or maybe you havent been doing that. If you havent you wont have to worry about that chainsaw much longer. Its a 2 cycle engine and the oil you mix in the gas lubricates the cylinder and valves.

The fuel oil mix lubricates the piston when it's running. the bar oil is for the chain. there is no oil reservoir for the engine it's air cooled.the fuel oil mix is designed a tad rich that's why it smokes a little the combustion proses doesn't burn all the oil and it lubricates the internal moving parts.

all chainsaws are 2 cycle unless its an electric.

You don't have to change oil because its 2 stroke..Bar oil is there to lube the chain and you'll notice that the fuel is less then the bar oil its so you remeber to oil when you fuel...Be sure to mix the right fuel mixture nornally 50:1 ratio

It's a two cycle motor and it does not need motor oil ....the engine is lubricated by the oil that is in the fuel mixture

you are supposed to be mixing oil in with the gas. that is what lubes the engine. the b&c oil is lube for the bar & chain. the oil mixed with the gas lubes the engine. chainsaws are two stroke engines. no crankcase=no oil changes.
look up two stroke engines on wikipedia, it will explain all about it
