It's not that they can't move around it, it's that they don't know exactly what it is yet. If it's a heat tile or something critical, the shuttle will not be safe for re-entry. they'll have to dock it with the International Space Station until another shuttle can be sent up to rescue the astonauts.

if something works the first time and it is simple to do over and over again why try to find another way and endanger the craft or people
of either to slow an exit from earth athmasphere to space or space to earth risk of burnning up if the angle is wrong.

if it worked and it was simple to repeat and safe don't fix it!
