Electricity goes from higher potential to lower potential...
Ground is zero potential ... so thats why it wants to touch the ground :)
It's like water flowing from higher level to lower level

It has to ground out........where the hell else is it going to go? If it didn't it would just keep shooting in different directions, that would be awful.

it doesnt. when clouds rush past each other, thunder occurs. the energy then escapes, going either up or down. usually, we cant see the up part because it is usually above us. we see lightening first because light travels faster than sound.
