heh, 'big dam fan' that's good :)
Well, I'd say if you were going for a week, Hoover is an excellent place to get away from the glitz of Vegas for an afternoon.
Since you're not going to be there very long, I would think that you'd end up frustrated that you didn't spend that time seeing some of the bazillion things there are to see on the strip.
Of course, it always depends a bit on what you really like to do - but I don't gamble much, and I can still be completely happy spending an entire week in Vegas doing shows, eating great foot, gawking at folks, and checking out all that the mega-hotels have to offer.

I doubt the tour is 4 hours long. As far as I know, due to security restrictions, they don't take people down into the heart of the dam anymore. You can still get a guided tour, but it is short. I remember it being no more than an hour. But after you consider the drive out there, and back again, you are still looking at a half-day adventure, at least, probably more.
Is it worth it? Yes. I have been to Vegas several times. The strip can be done in one day...really, all the things are the same. Lot's of noisy casinos. The place is an armpit of filth, drunks, noise, and porn.
Ok, so I editorialized a little. My guess is that you will have fonder, more lasting memories of Hoover Dam than you will the strip.

I went right after 9/11 They don't allow you to go inside. There is a little museum with a video. Walk across it and get the feel for how big it is. This is one of the greatest engineering achievements of modern man. You should see it once. There were two tours offered when I went. The difference between them was that one gave you a buffet lunch at an indian casino on a lake on US govt. property. I regret not taking that version. It would have been nice to see something else different.
I've been to Vegas 5 times in 5 years and now I'm editorializing but, it's overrated and overpriced. Those 4 hours of that tour will save you tons of money.

My husband and I took the tour this summer, as a woman I thought it interesting and am glad I took the toor but wouldn't want to do it again, it was a little boring, I don't think it took 4 hours, seems more like it was a couple of hours. My husband liked it more than I did, so it might just be a man thing. As far as driving out to see the Hoover Dam and walking around absolutely, you need to go see it, we have been to see it 3 times, it is beautiful and a sight to see. And the drive over from Vegas was nice with alot of beauty to see also.

It won't seem that long when you are on it. We took it and enjoyed it. Our tour involved seeing a chocolate candy factory, a couple of movie stars' homes (from a distance) and of course, the Dam. We only had so much money to lose on gambling, so this was a nice distraction for awhile. We also had time to do some exploring on the strip. Have fun and Good Luck!!

I went years ago and enjoyed it, but I'm also a fan of Modern Marvels and similar shows. Go on the tour and you can tell everybody that you stood in the dam line and went on a dam tour and bought some dam souvenirs.

I suggest you and your girl go to the strip first, for fourty-eight hours. Drop all your $. Now you have time to tour the Hover Dam and see some history. You may have to hich-hike to the airport, but, I'm sure you will have fun, Enjoy my friends.

You've got all the rest of the time to do the strip. I suggest you do the dam and falls. It's VERY impressive.
