Is there an alternative sand to use besides high priced playsand for the base of my "soft set" block patio? And where would be a good place to look for it?

depending where you live the material will differ but you want concrete sand or a coarse sand not a fine play sand or yellow masonry sand. Call the local aggregate supplier and buy it by the cubic yard it is the cheapest sand. Tell them what your doing and that you want coarse concrete sand. Don't let them sell you stone dust it will compact unevenly and that is usually used for setting flagstone.

You can go to a bulk sand dealer...purchase a ton for about $20-$25 and sift it yourself through screen wire. The sand should be fairly dry for home sifting.
Concrete ready mix plants will sometimes sell sand in smaller amounts.
