Learn the needs of the customer. Pointed questions, then listen. listen, listen.

Know the product, it's strengths and it's weaknesses. Do not over sell. Explain the strengths. Admit the weakness if asked.
Every product has some shortcoming. No product is "perfect". No person's work is perfect. No person is perfect.

Explain the best of the product, and it's limitations. If you don't, it will come back to bite you in the as*.

Don't give the customer too much information. They don't need or want to know the history of plastic when buying a plastic product. They want to know "What will this do for me", to make my life better?"
If they ask technical information, be prepared to answer. If you do not know, say so, but that you will get that information for them. With cell phones, you may get it right away.

Pay attention to the customer. If they look confused or lost jump in by saying do you need help? Or ...Make a simple joke about them looking lost or confused. Suggest some choices for them.
It is really about paying attention to the customer and reading them. I would say the ability to read customers is the most important, and using the info they give works in making a sale 90% of the time.

For customers that look more confident compliment their choices without seeming needy or annoying.
Eg. Oh... I love that dress I have the same one in red. Do you have the shoes yet? Whatever..... make it up.
Good luck!
p.s. If your into psychology (which is important to sales) try reading a book by Robert Cialdini called Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion.
The info given is simple but effective.
