I'm half mexican, half "white". My parents divorced when I was 2 and I've been raised primarily by my mom. She is white, but not exactly sure what her ethnicity is (italian? spanish?) Shes dark with dark hair ;light eyes. For the past few years I have just identified myself as hispanic, or mexican. I feel like I'm betraying my mom in some way though because she and my step father raised me and my dad wasn't steadily in the picture. (lived 4 states away). I do speak with him though. I've heard before that "you are what your mother is" but I don't know what my mother is. At least I know for a fact that I am half mexican. Have you heard of this saying before? Should I feel like I'm betraying mom when I say I'm hispanic? She kind of gets annoyed by it and says I should just say I'm European. I look mexican and for some reason people always ask me what my ethnicity is. What would you say?

I also hate when I have to fill out forms (for school, etc) and it asks your ethnicity. The options would be "hispanic, not of caucasian origin" or Caucasian, not of hispanic origin". I can't really choose either one. And I don't really want to put "Other"

a few decades ago, a man who was 1/8 black was still considered an african american although he looked totally white. in this country, whatever minority you are, no matter how small, you are considered that. i don't know why. and i have never heard you are what your mother is. why don't you identify yourself as yourself? you are mexican AND whatever your mom is. as a mixed race woman, i get sick and tired of people trying to put me into a specific box. i am myself, and american. if you just say you are european, you are denying your mexican heritage and vice versa. and if your mom is annoyed at you claiming to be mexican, it has something to do with anger towards your father, not you. identify yourself however YOU feel comfortable, and to hell with everyone else's "boxes".

If people ask you say your mother is European and your father is Mexican. You don't have to pick one or the other, you are both.

This reminds me of that movie Spanglish. Maybe you should watch it and come to your own conclusion on what and who you would like to be. Good luck.
