at school we're going to be starting our science fair projects soon. (i absolutely hate it and want to do something easy to get it over with...but still get a good grade) i was considering doing a project on tooth decay (i know..it sounds weird..but seems easy) "what is the effect of various liquids on tooth decay?" i've heard that egg shells and teeth are made of the same thing so i was thinking that i could hard boil eggs and then place them in different liquids and then after a couple of weeks take them out and see how much has been decayed...my question is that are egg shells a good substitute for teeth and do you think my project will work out ok...also....what would be an accurate way of measuring how much has been decayed...the only thing i can think of is estimating the percent..but that's not very accurate.

You could do Coke (the drink re:teeth) If you put a nail in a bottle of Coke in a few days it's rusty. (The non aluminum kind). It similarly takes the enamel off your teeth. I'm not sure maybe it's the phosphoric acid and the sugar causes the decay factor. You could put several things in Coke and monitor what happens and why you have deduced the outcome. (You can use pH paper to help you determine the pH and how it affects certain articles in a certain amount of time and therefore why it is bad for you. Metal versus plastic, versus aluminum, versus ____? the sky's the limit. Not to mention that in the human body the carbonation has to be worked out thru the lungs, the average can of Coke I think has about 7 teaspoons of sugar in it (double check) which would greatly increase blood sugar levels in the diabetic, could erode the esophagus, aggrevate gastritis in the stomach, the high sodium content , caffeine content and how that affects the body, etc. Yours sounds really great but might be hard to deliver. Mine is simply an idea, that's what this site is all about.
