Jocelyn Bell Burnell (1943 - ), British astrophysicist (discovery of radio pulsars).
Susan Greenfield (1951 - ), British neurophysiologist.
Stephen William Hawking (1942 - ), British theoretical physicist.
Rosalyn Sussman Yalow, (1921 - ), American medical physicist (Nobel prize for radioimmunoassay).

There must be a long list, unless you want "House-hold names." Nothing like Albert Einstein or Isaac Newton, although Hawking comes close.
Carl Sagan died in 1996.

Steven Hawking is one but John Backus, Steve Bourne, Thomas Eugene Kurtz, Rudy Rucker, Lotfi Asker Zadeh, Dorothy Denning, and Tim Berners-Lee are just a few famous computer scientists.

Don Johanson, a famous paleoanthropologist, is still alive. He discovered the first Australopithecus afarensis, "Lucy," which was the earliest bipedal human ancestor ever. And, the skeleton was rather complete.
