I didn't realize that there was a connection between being an artist and being on top spot on the charts. I guess that there as many answers on your question as there are people with access to the Internet on this planet. I consider her an artist because of her voice, it's beautiful, unlike many of her colleagues who can't sing and who are doing it just for fame and fortune.

Alicia keys IS truly an artist!!! A lot of artist are out here only using a beat maker for their beats(tracks). When you have went through the pain and struggle of learning to play an instrument, you can and will be considered a true artist. And on top of that, she has a great voice and a great producer to make her beats.

I love Alicia Keys - she is so sweet, and genuine, and you know what? She's Passionate about what she does - she loves her music, she loves her piano, she loves her singing
she's in the industry for the right reasons, not just for the money like the other fools, and she's talented!!!
THATS WHAT MAKES HER A GREAT ARTIST!!!! - i dont think or rather i think it has little to do with whether or not she has #1 hits
but she did work her a.s.s off to get where she is right now, and she does deserves every accolade she gets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alicia Keys is an artist not because of her record sells. There are a lot of people who sell as many as she does and ain't sh*t. Alicia is a gifted musician, a talented songwriter, has a great voice and she's beautiful because she is she unique. That girl is the truth and that's all there is to it.

I think she's an artist but not because of her success but because of the caliber of her work. Success is not an indicator or artistic merit, look at the charts (pop, country, rock) half these people have absolutely no skill they are just cranking out more of the same formula that made their predecessors successful.

I think she's a great artist, but merely selling a lot of records doesn't make her one. There are a lot of lame-*** "artists" who do that.
