The check number is for record keeping, and to help prevent forged checks from getting paid out. The transit number routes the check from wherever it was deposited to your bank so that your account can be debited.

I think the check number is important in record keeping, so the person knows which check went where because it has a specific number.

As far as the transit number...I'm not sure what that is. If you mean the routing number it's because that's the number connected to your Bank, which allows the check to be processed and withdrawn from your checking account
