You would probably get around faster on a bike.

If you want to go to Red Rock Canyon or Hoover Dam, or downtown, it's a good idea to rent a car. We always rent from Thrifty. All the hotels have valet parking, but avoid the strip and use the back streets to drive on. You can also park in the free parking garages if you want, so parking is not a problem. There is no parking along the strip. I know you can take a bus or trolley or the sky ride thing, but you have to wait in line for that stuff.
Walking is good if you plan to stay on the strip and not take any side trips.

Great question-
I was just there last month and rented a car. Parking is free at the big hotels along the strip- it wasn't difficult finding places to park. Also, park valet when you are in a hurry to get somewhere at a certain time. It's free of charge, but it's nice to give the valet guy 2 bucks when he brings around your car...
We rented a car because we were staying downtown- having a car is a must if staying downtown because you don't want to waste lots of time on the bus or in taxis getting to the strip.
In the future I wouldn't rent a car if I was to stay in the central part of the strip, but I would if I was staying on the north or south end. Take a look at a map of the hotels along the strip. There are many online...

To be honest - it really depends on what you're planning to do in Vegas.
First of all - there is NO on-street parking on the Las Vegas strip. However, the hotels all have lots/garages and valet. Average time it's taken me to find a space? 10 minutes, tops.
Secondly, if you're just staying on the Strip, it's faster and easier to go by foot rather than car. Traffic on the Strip, especially in the evenings, SUCKS, (Worse than Midtown when there's frozen zones. Trust me. I've done both.) However, if you're not staying on the Strip, or are planning to venture off of it (i.e. going around town) - it's worth it to rent a car. But if you're just going to casino/hotel hop - don't waste the money. It'll be easier and faster to walk, take the tram or the monorail, or maybe a cab.

All the casinos have plenty of parking but if you are just going to be around the strip, take cabs. The traffic up and down the strip is ridiculous. The only reason that I would rent a car in vegas is if I was driving somewhere specific that was outside the city limits.

If you are staying on the strip, and are not interested in the rest of Vegas, you don't need a car. There is a monorail, and the strip is walkable if you are in shape and take your time. Say you stay on the south end, you could take a cab to the north end and tool around for the day, and either grab a cab back or just walk back as you tool around.
If you want to see other stuff (Hoover Dam for example - much more interesting than the strip), you would want a car.

No need to rent a car in Vegas unless your hotel or where you are staying is completely far from the Strip.
There are walkways now that connect casinos, and most people just walk around or catch a cab when needed. Renting a car will cost a lot more than an occasional taxi ride.
Besides - if you are going to have a few drinks - why risk driving???

I wouldn't recommend renting a car in Vegas. There are so many cars there, you'll be stuck in traffic all day. Also, there is a fee to park in the hotels parking lot that's located on the strip.

You can't actually park on the Strip but each and every business and hotel along the Strip has more than enough free parking in their lot.
Every hotel offers free valet or self parking.
It is NOTHING like the parking situation in NYC.

If your staying on the Strip, you probably won't need a car. Downtown and off strip, you're better off with one. Just remember that Industrial Road and Paradise Road run parallel to Las Vegas Blvd. and you can use those to get around to various casinos on the strip.
