I have pumpkins in my garden. When do you know that they are ready to be picked? The vine is still looking healthy, not dried.

Thanks.

when they are Orange.. or if the vine dries up.. don't worry about picking them early (all the pumpkins that you buy in the store are already picked.. just be careful of the skin.. if it gets damaged.. it will start to decompose.. if not.. i have kept one all winter, then planted the seeds inside in the spring..

Just wait until the vine and leaves have dried up a little, then cut off at about 3" for the stem. Don't pick up by the stem, sometimes they are kind of loose and when it falls, see ya. I pick sooner than others because I have psycho squirrels that will chew the pumpkin open to get the seeds and leave me with nothing. Filthy tree rats that what they are. There's one now just mocking me thru the window. I tell you if I ever get ahold of one of them they will know the meaning of fear. Oh, sorry, I was talking about pumpkins. Happy Halloween!

I grew white pumpkins this year! I was told that when the leaves start to whither and die I can harvest them. Make sure you cut some of the stem but do not hold it by the stem. Wash and dry them with a cloth. I was told to keep in cool dark place and to coat them with cooking oil if I was wanting them for Halloween.

The variable to decide when to pick pumpkins is the size that would fill the purpose of it, they should be edible already, they would keep growing as long as the plant looks healthy, so choose the size you like and pick it.
