I drive a 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix SE(2 door) and It's been acting really weird lately. About 2 and a half weeks ago, I was driving and in the middle of my turn onto a road, my car completely turned off. The steering wheel locked, the brakes died, and I had no control. Then last night, I had the same thing happen again, but this time Thank the Lord, the breaks still worked, and the headlights worked and I was able to coast to the side of the road. Any idea of what could be the problem? I completely cleaned my battery terminals, and a mechanic friend of mine checked the battery with a machine he has and said it was holding a great charge. I was told to try replacing the alternator, and just had that replace today. If the car continues to do this thing where it turns off in the middle of driving and the wheel locks off, what else could it be? Maybe it's something electrical and I need a diagonistics checK?Thanks so much.

Yes, it could be a sensor going bad. You should have a diagnostic run.

Ide suggest checking out the "brain" or computer for the car. Usually it's located behind the glove box and is a silver box shaped object. Have a local AutoZone or auto parts store run a free scan on your system. Double check to make sure the plug isn't loose or intermittent. Most salvage yards have used modules, just be sure to replace it with the correct model. The steering wheel locking up is because your power steering won't work if the engine isn't running.

You already solved it - The alternator. You had lights because they were running off the battery. You had brakes because you still had pressure in the vacuum booster. You lost electrical because the alternator died. You only need the battery to run the lights, radio, horn, starter, etc. The alternator is what supplies electricty to the spark plugs. Without that you're screwed. The alternator also charges the battery while you're driving. That's why when the battery dies you can jump start it. Once you get it going you don't need the battery, just the alternator.

Side note - the battery dies because you either ran it down (left lights on, radio on, etc), the fan belt is loose (not turning the alternator thus not charging the battery), or the alternator died.

This could be a number of different things. If you got a check engine light, you can always get that checked for free in places like AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts. It sounds to me like it could be a problem with the computer, or even possibly the distributor. Have a mechanic check your car out and bring up those possibilities.

That $5K must be further to the deal, so after taxes/call/tags/expenses, etc., that $10K automobile turns right into a $12K automobile... with $5K to characteristic, making it a $17K automobile. No lender in at present's financial gadget is going to private loan you $7K over what a automobile is incredibly worth, whether you have superb credit. you're able to pay it down way further formerly you think of approximately figuring out to purchase and merchandising it. Your computer in the car might be the problem. It could be going bad or there is a short in the power/ground wire to it.
