Day of the Triffids? Comet didn't hit. Spectacular meteor shower that lasted long enough for whole world to see it. All that saw the lights from the fireballs went blind. Spores came down. Giant walking carnivorous plants grew. Killed people, yada yada ...

It was called "the Day the Earth Stood Still" and stared some actors from Birmingham, Alabama, who thought they had the answers to the world's problems. They all went blind and walked around on crutches in the end. The hero lived in downtown Atlanta, Ga., and wound up with the heroine at the end.
