I personally enjoy them. They are the best people to hang out with. They are REAL, they lay it out on the table saying, This is me, take it or leave it. Its nice. No fakeness. They are so artistic. They have a real soul and are normally very smart and are the nicest people once you know them. Some people might be afraid, but you will find they make the best Friends and boyfriends.

It's a bit of a paradox.
Most people who identify as "gothic" would prefer that people would just let them be...live and let live, as it were. To be accepted would be convenient, and definitely alleviate the annoyances of people bent on harrassing them for "being different."
The irony is that if it were perfectly accepted and everybody was totally cool with it and there was no big deal about being gothic, there wouldn't be as much appeal to those gravitating towards that style.
Granted, for some it's a phase of rebellion...the shock value or introversion. For others, it's just gravitation towards a common aesthetic. It's ONLY an aesthetic...not a religion, not a cult, not some social movement.
The majority of people will think they're freaks...and that's ok. Most goths think they are, too. That's ok.

I think they are just trying to figure out who they are, nothing wrong w/ it.
I judge people on what is in the inside over what the outside looks like. If everybody looked the same and dressed the same what a boring, ugly world it would be.
I'm a hairstylist, I've done many gothic kids hair and find many to be nicer and more down to earth than the jocks, preps and so on.
People should dress and be who they want to be without being teased for it.

I have a teen aged daughter whom explained to me that most goth people are very kick back and tolerant of others as they wish to be accepted as they are. We began this discussion because my son, her younger brother likes the way goth/punker kids dress and would like me to allow him to dress this way. At first I was very much against letting my son express himself in this manner but he assured me that the people he kknows and associates with are some of his best froends and the best people he knows. I was pleased to learn that the lessons I have taught my children about accepting all people based on their character have stuck. I am so proud. People are people and should be judged based on the content of their character and not what they wear.

...why do they wear all that dark makeup? they could be really pretty if they wore some nicer clothes and stopped using that dark eyeliner!
but there still nice people so i guess thats all that matters.
