you have to see what looks best on your finger.....just don't pick one until it calls to you.......when you slip it on and it takes your breath away.......thats the one to get.

Platinum is the rarer metal (read: more expensive), however, it does have it's issues - the metal will not retain it's high polish over time - it will begin to show a patina, kind of a dull look. So, if you want the white look, do either white gold (which is rhodium plated, and will at some point require re-plating), or check into palladium. It's a platinum metal, but way cheaper, more the price of white gold, yet retains it's whiteness and luster.
However, it all comes down to what you like on you. If you prefer the yellow gold look, just get that one. You can always upgrade you ring later, when you are more financially able.

Go for white gold and 1/4 carat diamond. I have a lot of friends who were unhappy with platinum after a while, and have had to get their stone reset in white gold.

Are you a gold or silver person is also a question to ask yourself... personally, I am a gold and could never have a platinum ring on my finger...

Princess cut diamond's give off the most "sparkle" so keep that in mind also. But, the best way is to try on everything that is within your price range and go with the one that you like instantly.

Congratulations by the way!

Take care

I would say traditional gold with the 1/4 carat diamond solitaire. Who needs all that blingage when a twinkle is just as precious? Congrats and cheers to the both of you!!! :)

( maybe something that has a cluster of smaller daimonds around a slightly bigger one set in the middle)

What grade is the diamond? I'd go with the better quality stone, myself, whichever it was, although I would lean towards the platinum band and setting. Platinum is a very rare metal, and as such would be more valuable. Also, the person who said platinum was soft and discolored easily probably didn't actually have platinum --it's quite sturdy and resists tarnishing.
Anyway, congrats on the engagement!

Here is a place to design your own...diamonds USA are reasonable.

Diamond Trading Company

Then you could buy a "Fake" that looks real until you could afford the real one....these are set in real gold or platinum or silver - just the stone isnt a diamond, you could have the look in a real mounting and not the expense of a diamond. Just an option. and they do flex pay where you can pay over a month or two and have 30 days to decide to keep or not to keep........unlike the first ones that come out 20 years ago these do not fade or loose thier brilliance and you can get stone replacemant.

go with low carat gold and bigger diamond. platinum is very soft and bends very easily. also, platinum changes color easy when putting your hands in chemicals, (including dishwashing detergent). i had platinum and after a year, had the same ring reset in 14K white gold. besides, the diamonds last forever, metals don't

Honestly the cut that looks the biggest with the smallest carat weight is the marquese it's elongated and any jewlery person will tell you that you get more look of diamond for your money. My ring is Platnium and trust me your better off going with Silver instead of platnium if you want that white band look cuz silver is stronger, cheaper and believe me I also have silver rings and there is NOOOO difference. plus you'll save ALOT of money using silver rathere than gold or platnium

If you are trying to cut on cost get the gold band. Plantinum is more expensive.
