A sincere and honest apology should be acceptable. Things come up in life that are not planned out and you don't need to go into depth with an explaination. Just apologize....afterall if the host didn't have that kind of money to spend they shouldn't be spending it in the first place.

It depends... how much cash? If its a small amount, and he/she is upset about the principle (that you bailed on them)... then its a simple... matter of showing them that you do care about their feelings and that it wasn't a self absorbed action that made you miss this event. First off... dont rationalize it to them if it is trivial...and you will know if its trivial... OH my GOD there was this great sale on shoes...i just couldnt miss it << great example of a stupid reason to miss the event. If your reason even REMOTELY sounds similar...just apologize, admit that you made a poor decision and that you REALLY REALLY appreciate them going out on a limb for you. That you really would like to make it up to them. Offer to buy them tickets to a show in town that you think they will like. Better yet....BUY them if you know they would want to go...and give the tickets to them
If the value they lost was higher.... as in.... hey I bailed on a political fundraiser and my seat was for 2,000 bucks... hmm. Thats tougher. If the seat could have been given to someone that WOULD have used it... you are in deep S*h*i*t. If they didn't have the opportunity to give it to someone that was wanting the seat.... then I'd say you could make it up to them by wanting to know as much about the event as possible. In return...offer to pay for their seat or something of similar value. The point is to show that you care about the event that you missed, and that you appreciate the favor they were doint for you.

I would write a heart felt letter, the truth, of an apology. I would also repay the money. Even if I had to do it in payments. In your heart, what do you think you should do?

you left alot of info there,, was it a party in your honor? were you the only one invited?
If not,, then I would just send a note to say you are sorry. If she is really out alot of money then offer to take her to dinner or to pay what she lost.

suck up to them until they forgive you...if that don't work, pray about it, but the main thing is that u ask them to forgive u, then pray.
